Won Access to Court Files in Lawyer Fee Fight
Date: May 2008
Case Name: Williams v. Heins Mills & Olson PLC, 36 Media L. Rep. 1924
Jurisdiction: U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota
When a lawyer sued his former firm over the allocation of millions of dollars in fees from a class action settlement, the firm obtained a protective order sealing court records about its financial arrangements.
Our lawyers successfully intervened on behalf of the Star Tribune and convinced the district court to lift the seal on nearly all of that information. The court found that "the specific public interest in this case together with the strong presumption of openness [of court records] outweighs defendants' privacy concerns generally" about disclosure of information such as the law firm's business operations, accounts receivable, indebtedness, and method of allocating and distributing firm net income.
