Faegre Baker Daniels is one of the 75 largest law firms headquartered in the United States and the largest law firm in the state of Minnesota. It embodies the values and character of a firm whose history is rooted in the work ethic of the midwestern United States.
Minneapolis, our firm's office location in Minnesota, is the largest city in the state and part of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Despite the twin moniker, the two cities are independent municipalities with defined borders and are quite distinct from each other. Minneapolis is somewhat younger and with a more modern skyline, while Saint Paul has been likened to an East Coast or European city with quaint neighborhoods and a vast collection of well-preserved, late-Victorian architecture. Also of some note are the differing cultural backgrounds of the two cities: Minneapolis was influenced by its early (and still influential) Scandinavian/Lutheran heritage and boasts the largest Somali community in North America, while St. Paul was influenced by its early French, Irish and German Catholic roots and currently hosts a thriving Hmong community.
Businesses thrive in Minnesota. Twenty-one Fortune 500 companies and dozens of Fortune 1,000 companies call Minnesota home, with all but one Minnesota Fortune 500 firm based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region. Additionally, Minneapolis boasts a rich cultural landscape that draws audiences to the city for theater, visual art, writing and music. It is second only to New York City in live theater per capita and is the third-largest theater market in the U.S.
The name "Minneapolis," or "The City of Lakes" — a mash-up of the Dakota word minne and the Ancient Greek word polis — refers to the city's 22 natural lakes. The local jewels are the "Chain of Lakes:" Cedar, Isles, Brownie, Calhoun and Harriet, each 3-4 miles around. The city's excellent parks department maintains walking and biking paths around the lakes, offering residents a place to exercise or stroll. The Lake Harriet Bandshell is a popular summertime event locale, often featuring the renowned Minnesota Orchestra.
The city has fostered developed neighborhoods, each with a distinctive feel. Downtown is the visual anchor featuring the high-rise suites, sporting events (NBA's basketball Timberwolves, NFL's football Vikings and MLB's baseball Twins all play downtown) and nightclub scenes. Northeast is the oldest part of the city, showing off its working-class and immigrant roots in great ethnic food, neighborhood bars and social clubs — and more recently home to an arts and riverfront redevelopment movement. Uptown historically has been one of the city's youth centers, featuring inventive food, drink and theater, but it is orienting itself more towards young professionals and families, as real estate anywhere near the lakes becomes an ever more prized commodity. Uptown and the Lakes area dissolves into quiet, tucked-away Linden Hills (a one-time bedroom community) to the south and Lyn-Lake, home to many indie stages, music-oriented cafes and bars. The University of Minnesota's main campus straddles the Mississippi River in the southeast surrounded by the usual college campus environs.
Medicine is a major industry in the region, and in the southeasterly city of Rochester, as the University of Minnesota has joined other colleges and hospitals in significant medical research, and major medical device manufacturers base their operations in the area. Technology companies have also come to play an important role in the region's economy.
It is common for residents of the Twin Cities area to own or share cabins and other properties along lakes and forested areas in the central and northern regions of the state, and weekend trips "up North" happen through the warmer months. Ice fishing is also a major pastime in the winter. Hunting, snowmobiling, ATV-riding and numerous other outdoor activities are also popular.
