With more than 600,000 people supporting a fast-growing metropolitan area of nearly 3 million, Denver is the capital and largest city of Colorado. Known as "The Mile-High City," it sits at an altitude of 5,280 feet/1,600 meters above sea level at the point where the Great Plains give way to the Rocky Mountains. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.
The city embraces its cowboy and mining past but also looks toward the future with a vibrant arts and performing arts scene, dozens of great outdoor festivals, and distinct neighborhoods, each offering a unique experience. Denver boasts everything a cosmopolitan city has to offer including a spectacular view of and easy access to the Rocky Mountains, which are only 12 miles west of town.
Denver is home to many nationally recognized museums, including a new wing for the Denver Art Museum by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, the second largest performing arts center in the nation after Lincoln Center in New York, and bustling neighborhoods such as LoDo (short for "Lower Downtown"), filled with art galleries, restaurants, bars and clubs. That is part of the reason why Denver has been recognized more than once as the best city for singles.
Denver is home to teams from five major sports: six-time Super Bowl finalists Denver Broncos, National League baseball team Colorado Rockies, the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids.
Because of its proximity to the mountains and generally sunny weather, Denver has gained a reputation as being a very active, outdoor-oriented city. Many Denver residents spend the weekends in the mountains, skiing in the winter or hiking, climbing, kayaking and camping in the summer.
Additionally, Denver and the surrounding cities of the Front Range are home to a large number of local and national breweries. Many restaurants in the region have on-site breweries, and some of the larger brewers, including Coors and the New Belgium Brewing Company, offer tours. Overall, Denver ranks first in the nation in terms of beer production per capita, and second overall in terms of number of breweries.
