Overview

Dan Coppel offers clients more than 25 years of experience, which includes leading on several landmark transactions. His practice focuses on cross border private M&A, private equity and joint venture deals and restructurings. He is a trusted counsellor to the boards of several clients and advises on corporate governance, corporate strategy (including dispute resolution) as well as divestments and acquisitions. Dan’s sectoral specialisms are varied and include technology, manufacturing, automotive and real estate investment.

Dan was recognized by Chambers for mergers and acquisitions work under English law, private equity transactions, and for energy and natural resources work. He is also recommended by PLC, International Financial Law Review and The Legal 500 for mergers and acquisitions. Dan led teams recognized by both Legal Week and The Lawyer for Deal of the Year and Corporate Team of the Year, respectively.

Representation

Dan’s transactional practice ranges from large acquisitions, divestments and restructurings to relatively small investments and early-stage capital raisings. Significant representations include:

  • Advised a global technology company on the $4 billion carve out and divestment of a UK subsidiary.
  • Advised a communications platform as a service based in London on several transactions including its EUR300 million Series A capital raising, and on multiple acquisitions and disposals in Europe and the U.S.
  • Advised two investment groups in the £336 million sale of a cement plant to a British construction materials company, creating the UK’s largest independent building materials group.
  • Advised an Italian oil major on the $4.2 billion sale of a controlling stake of an oil and gas producing subsidiary.
  • Advised on the sale of an office complex to a real estate investor for $333 million.
  • Advised affiliates of an automotive company on the EUR 105 million asset financing of a collection of classic cars including a Ferrari 250 GTO which went on to become the highest valued car ever sold at auction.
  • Advised an automotive company on English high court litigation, successfully having all claims struck out and again successfully prevailing on all counts when the decision was brought before the Court of Appeal.
  • Advised the lead investor on a joint venture to bring a global fast food company to 24 sub-Saharan African countries.
  • Advised a venture capital firm on several early stage, fast growth biotech investments in Europe.
  • Advised a U.S. beverages company with global operations on its corporate restructuring.
  • Advised a Japanese steel company on a global alliance with Italian and U.S. partners in the construction machinery sector.
  • Advised a financial institution as underwriter of the IPO of Ukraine’s largest agricultural holding.
  • Advised a Russian investment company on the acquisition of a European IT company. 
  • Advised the world’s largest steel company on the disposal of three coal mines.
  • Advised a family office on the disposal of a 50% stake in a Central Asian oil company to an oil major for approximately $1.5 billion.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining Faegre Drinker, Dan served as a partner and co-head of the London corporate group of an international law firm. He has previously practiced law in New York and Moscow.
