Luke E. Steffe

Associate

Overview

Luke Steffe supports clients as they develop and protect their valuable intellectual property portfolios. As a musician-turned-scientist who has found a passion in intellectual property, Luke leverages his diverse experiences to provide innovative solutions for his clients.

Intellectual Property Experience

As a summer associate with Faegre Drinker, Luke conducted research and drafted memoranda for a range of patent, copyright and trademark litigation matters. He also served as a legal intern for Indiana University’s Office of Vice President and General Counsel, handling quick-turn research regarding contract disputes, employment law and compliance with federal regulations. In this role, Luke also wrote and reviewed agreements for the licensing of IU’s intellectual property portfolio. As a member of the Intellectual Property Clinic during his time at Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Luke advised clients through the process of registering trademarks and how to leverage their intellectual property portfolios to protect their brands. Luke’s creative approach to problem solving played an integral part in the Clinic’s launch of a Name, Image and Likeness initiative — the first program in the country to support NCAA athletes as they navigate the ever-changing legal landscape.

Luke focuses his academic research on the intersection of intellectual property and social justice to ensure the equitable administration of IP rights for non-traditional and diverse art forms. His Note, Protection and Prevention: The Shortcomings of U.S. Copyright Law in Combatting Cultural Appropriation in the Fashion Industry, was selected for publication in Volume 12 of IP Theory, an intellectual-property-focused journal at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. Luke also contributed research support for the publication Conjuring the Flag: The Problem of Implied Government Endorsements, a forthcoming publication in the Maryland Law Review authored by Michael Mattioli.

Prior Experience

Luke completed a judicial internship with Judge Jose M. Rodriguez in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida.

Luke served as an editor and podcast host for IP Theory, an intellectual property journal at Indiana University, Maurer School of Law.

Luke enjoys playing and listening to music, spending time with his friends outdoors, trying new cuisines, and keeping up with the latest in fashion design.
