Internet Pharmacy Safeguards, We Salute You

Studies show that half of the medicines sold online are counterfeit, and there are nearly 35,000 online drug sellers, 97 percent of which operate illegally. The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies – Global (ASOP Global), founded by Faegre Baker Daniels counsel Libby Baney, works to shed light on these illegal e-pharmacies and protect consumers from them.

In an article published on CircleID.com, Baney, who also serves as ASOP Global’s executive director, announced the creation of the organization’s Internet Pharmacy Safety E-Commerce Leadership Award, which will recognize internet commerce companies who take responsible, voluntary action against illicit e-pharmacies.

“ASOP Global welcomes the nomination of registries, registrars, advertising providers, payment processors, shippers, other e-commerce companies, organizations or related individuals who have evidenced a commitment to improving patient safety online. ASOP Global plans to honor the award recipients during [the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) conference] this fall.”
