Jim's practice focuses primarily on complex financial transactions, including real estate and structured finance, involving many different kinds of assets. He has broad experience in structuring and negotiating transactions at the outset and restructuring nonperforming transactions. He regularly counsels borrowers and issuers as well as lenders and purchasers of debt. Recent major transactions include:
- Counsel to receiver in liquidation of finance company with $500 million portfolio of real estate loans
- Trustee in the liquidation of MJK Clearing, at the time the largest brokerage liquidation ever ordered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). All Claims of creditors and customers were paid in full
- Counsel to owner in the structured finance of a shopping center in Shanghai
- Counsel to major secured creditor, credit card processor and issuer of cobranded credit cards in the Northwestern Airlines Bankruptcy; counsel to secured lender and debtor-in-possession lender in the Conseco bankruptcy; counsel to secured lender as major creditor in the bankruptcy of DVI
- Counsel to Target Corporation in connection with sale of credit card receivables of its Marshall Field's Division and its Mervyn's Division
- Chair, Board of Directors, Attorneys' Liability Assurance Society (Bermuda) Ltd. (ALAS)
