Matthew L. Thompson

Matt Thompson counsels a diverse clientele in the investment management and financial services industries. He organized Faegre Baker Daniels' investment management practice in 1995.

Matt assists and counsels hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, private equity firms and other investment managers regarding the formation, organization, structuring, syndication and ongoing compliance requirements of private investment funds and related management organizations, and with other products and services, including , management contracts, marketing arrangements, strategic partnerships, vendor contracts, and mergers and acquisitions.

His practice encompasses a variety of investment products and services, including hedge funds (both domestic and offshore), private equity and venture capital funds, hybrid structures, and individually managed accounts. He also regularly represents institutional investors and their advisers in review of prospective investments.

Matt has participated in the organization and ongoing counseling of numerous mutual funds and structuring many investment company mergers and acquisitions. His practice also includes serving as legal counsel to mutual funds and their sponsors, and as independent legal counsel to mutual fund boards.

Commencing his legal career in 1985 with Dorsey & Whitney, Matt was promoted to partner on January 1, 1993. He joined Faegre Baker Daniels as a partner in 1995. From 1994 to 1995, Matt served as vice president and fund counsel of Inter-Regional Financial Group (now RBC Wealth Management). Prior to law school, Matt spent more than three years in the audit department of Laventhol & Horwath, a national certified public accounting firm.
