Mayor's Celebration of Diversity Award Given to Baker & Daniels

Baker & Daniels LLP was named the recipient of the seventh annual Mayor's Celebration of Diversity Award for Development during an awards luncheon January 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The diversity awards recognize businesses and organizations that embrace, celebrate and apply holistic inclusion and participation of a diverse people, thus making the workplace a better environment in which to work and the community a better place in which to live, work and raise a family. The development award is given based on opportunities for diversity education and
communication within an organization.

Baker & Daniels is the first law firm to receive a Mayor's Celebration of Diversity Award, which was presented by Mayor Greg Ballard. Representing Baker & Daniels at the luncheon were Greg Utken, a member of the firm's executive committee and chair of the diversity committee; Joseph Smith Jr., a partner whose practice includes working with minority- and women-owned businesses; and Brita Horvath, diversity and pro bono coordinator.

"We're very proud to receive the diversity award for development," said Tom Froehle, chairman and chief executive partner at Baker & Daniels. "It's a testament to the diversity committee's dedicated work and a tribute to the firm's continuous commitment to inclusion and diversity."

Baker & Daniels has an active diversity committee that serves as the centerpiece to support and promote diversity in all aspects of management, administration and operations. To enhance individual and collective awareness, the firm underwent an internal diversity assessment in 2006 through interviews and focus groups conducted by Boston-based Novations Group. Last year, the firm's management and Novations' experts began implementing an action plan that includes diversity and inclusion training for all professionals, paraprofessionals and support staff.

The diversity committee publishes a quarterly diversity e-newsletter, Diversity News, which is circulated to the entire firm. The chair of Baker & Daniels' diversity committee makes quarterly presentations to the partnership and associate attorneys, summarizing accomplishments from the prior quarter and goals for the next quarter. Additionally, a presentation on the firm's commitment to diversity and identifying it as one of the firm's core principles is made to each new entering class of associates in September, as well as at the beginning of each summer associate program.
