Baker & Daniels, Gosheff, Laramore Receive Pro Bono & Public Service Awards

Baker & Daniels and two of its lawyers — Damian "Dom" B. Gosheff and Jon B. Laramore — have been honored for their pro bono and public service contributions by Indiana legal organizations.

The Indiana Bar Foundation presented a Pro Bono Publico Award to Baker & Daniels for its assistance on legal cases of high importance on behalf of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking during the Randall T. Shepard Award dinner in downtown Indianapolis. Gosheff was recognized with a Pro Bono Publico Award for his ongoing advocacy on behalf of senior citizens and incapacitated adults, including his contributions to the Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) program in Fort Wayne.

At the Indiana State Bar Association's annual meeting, Laramore was given the Dave Hamacher Public Service Award for his significant contributions to the appellate practice in Indiana. The award, sponsored by the ISBA Appellate Practice Section, honors high moral character and ethical standards, service to the community and peacemaking qualities. It is named in memory of David M. Hamacher, former chair of the ISBA Appellate Practice Section.

The Pro Bono Publico Awards are presented by the Indiana Bar Foundation to recognize extraordinary contributions that are made toward ensuring that legal services are available to persons who could otherwise not afford them.

Baker & Daniels developed and now manages Indiana's appellate pro bono program, which operates under the auspices of the Indiana State Bar Association's Appellate Practice Section. The program offers pro bono legal assistance in civil appeals. One of the firm's representations for a victim of domestic violence effectively changed how Indiana's trial courts administer protective orders in domestic violence cases. Laramore and Matthew T. Albaugh represented Baker & Daniels in accepting the Pro Bono Publico Award.

Gosheff, who practices in Baker & Daniels' Fort Wayne office, helped organize VASIA in northeast Indiana to help individuals facing legal hurdles at the most vulnerable times in their life. Lawyers prepare and execute power of attorney, medical directives and legal work involved in court-appointed guardianships. Attorneys also serve as guardians ad litem or lawyers for the proposed guardian.

Laramore, who practices in Baker & Daniels' downtown Indianapolis office, is the lead partner in the firm's appellate practice. He is one of the most experienced appellate practitioners in the state of Indiana, having briefed and argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, Indiana Supreme Court and other state and federal appellate courts. Before joining Baker & Daniels in 2005, he served as legal counsel to Indiana Governors Frank O'Bannon and Joseph E. Kernan, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance and chief counsel to the Attorney General of Indiana.

Baker & Daniels has a long-standing commitment to pro bono and public interest work. The firm's lawyers, paralegals and other professionals seek to improve and expand access to justice for underserved individuals and communities. The firm currently is involved in dozens of pro bono and public interest projects, engagements and cases impacting communities, states, the nation and the world.
