Chambers Recognizes Faegre & Benson Indian Tribes Practice With a National Band 1 Ranking

Faegre & Benson is recognized as a national leader in Native American law in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business.

Chambers says Faegre & Benson has recently impressed with its representation of a number of syndicated bank lenders in the restructuring of distressed loans to Indian tribes. "Faegre & Benson is excellent," according to one client interviewed by Chambers. "The lawyers come through for us when we need it most and they always do the work quickly."

Members of the firm's Indian tribes practice handle casino development projects, tax and regulatory issues and undertake litigation to protect tribal sovereignty. Lawyers in this practice have "deep understanding of tribal finance and strong lines of communication with federal agencies," according to Chambers.

Matters highlighted by Chambers include the firm's representation of Muscogee (Creek) Nation in its $190 million bank credit facility to finance the construction and equipping of its new River Spirit Casino in Oklahoma.

  • Kent Richey. "Kent is just the best: a real lawyer's lawyer. He is the dean of financing these days," according to a client. Richey recently represented the Heartland Bank in a $23 million loan for a Wisconsin hotel expansion for the Menominee Indians.
  • Aaron Harkins. According to one client, Harkins "has grown in experience and knowledge." He is known for his financial transactions expertise and was integral to the Muscogee case. He also represented the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority as special Indian law counsel on the issuance of $200 million of senior notes.
