The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis and the Albert and Sara Reuben Senior and Community Resource Center honored Baker & Daniels LLP with the inaugural Reuben Community Partner Award for its Access to Justice program during a reception at the Jewish Community Center of Indianapolis recently.
Through the Access to Justice program, Baker & Daniels collaborates with the Albert and Sara Reuben Senior and Community Resource Center to serve low-income individuals and families in three significant areas — Holocaust survivor reparation applications, elder law issues and the formation of a faith-based legal service program. The Community Partner Award recognized Baker & Daniels for its ongoing involvement in all of these areas.
Since 2008, Baker & Daniels has served as Indiana's coordinating law firm in the Bet Tzedek Holocaust Survivors Justice Network, a legal service provider that assists Holocaust survivors with reparations applications and other basic legal needs. More than 40 Baker & Daniels lawyers have partnered with the Jewish Federation to notify more than 200 survivors in Indiana of Germany's most recent reparation program and to help them apply for benefits.
Baker & Daniels also participates in the Albert & Sara Reuben Senior and Community Resource Center's ElderSource program, which provides necessary services to older adults in their homes. Through ElderSource, attorneys counsel senior participants on preparation of end-of-life documents such as power of attorney and medical directives.
Finally, the firm continues to work with Jewish Federation agencies to develop a faith-based legal service program. This initiative will provide legal services to low-income families on a range of issues.
"Baker & Daniels very much appreciates the opportunity to join the Jewish Federation in its work with the communities it serves," said Carl Pebworth, a partner at Baker & Daniels and chair of the firm's pro bono and public service committee. "The federation's leadership and service as a community resource within Indianapolis is inspirational. We are excited to help expand the scope of that service and to be a part of bringing needed assistance to these communities. It was humbling to have the firm recognized and to accept the award on behalf of the firm."
The Jewish Federation also honored several individuals at the program for their service to the organization and its agencies in addition to presenting the organizational award to Baker & Daniels.
Baker & Daniels is involved in dozens of pro bono and public interest projects on the local, state, national and global levels, honoring the firm's long-standing commitment to pro bono work. Many employees across all of the firm's offices are dedicated to improving and expanding access to justice for underserved individuals and communities.
