Paraprofessionals

Overview

Paraprofessionals at FaegreBD include traditional litigation and transactional paralegals, as well as legal paraprofessionals with supplemental training or credentials in a specific industry, working in unique, practice area specific positions.

What We Offer

Our paraprofessionals support challenging legal work for top clients through cross-office collaboration on matters across the U.S. and more than 100 countries. Paraprofessionals contribute to the success of the firm and are rewarded for achieving annual billable targets. We provide a supportive work environment, programs and resources to help balance work and personal goals, leading technology tools and applications, and a high-performance, client service-focused culture where paraprofessionals can thrive.

Who We’re Seeking

We seek people who deliver superior client service, are highly organized and take initiative. Successful paraprofessionals are resourceful, knowledgeable in legal processes, independent workers, persuasive communicators and model positivity. We seek high-performance driven individuals who enjoy working with professionals at the top of their fields.

Rewards

We offer competitive pay and reward performance through our annual evaluation and compensation programs. Paraprofessionals are eligible for bonuses based on annual billable hours and value-added firm investment time.

A Community-Based Culture

We believe in giving back to our communities and credit up to 75 billable hours per year for each paraprofessional to devote to pro bono activities.

Career Development

New Hire Orientation

We provide information, tools and support to every new paraprofessional as they integrate into FaegreBD. A structured orientation sets the course for success and spans many topics, including practice-specific training.

Mentor and Advisor Program

New hires are partnered with a paraprofessional mentor who helps design the orientation plan to set these new colleagues up for success and integrate them into practice groups. Additionally, each paraprofessional has an attorney advisor to provide guidance with workflow and professional development.

Setting Up a Successful Career

We invest in paraprofessionals’ careers with a career model that defines key competencies demonstrated by successful FaegreBD paralegals and recognizes the importance of billable work, value-added firm investment time and demonstration of the firm’s core values. The career model sets performance expectations, provides opportunities for growth and development, and provides a path for progression. We provide in-house and external opportunities to further develop skills.

Feedback

Within the first year, paraprofessionals receive a mid-cycle evaluation completed by their attorney advisor. This evaluation provides opportunity to recognize strong early performance and clarify questions.

Each paraprofessional is evaluated annually, receiving feedback from those they work with frequently and their attorney advisor, with a path to a senior-level position, if desired.

What Our People Say

Peter Nielsen - Faegre Baker Daniels

What do you enjoy most about your role?

"I love that I get to work on a wide array of cases. For example, I may be asked to work on a contract matter, personal injury claim and medical device case in one day. The variety of work keeps me wanting to come back every day. I also enjoy that paralegals here have real responsibility and play a specific role on every team. You aren’t just given task after task in a top-down approach."

Peter Nielsen (Product Liability & Environmental, Des Moines)

Stephanie Darbo - Faegre Baker Daniels

What's your favorite thing about working here?

"There are far too many things to try to list, but the best part of Faegre Baker Daniels is the people. I’ve received endless mentoring from incredibly talented litigators and senior paralegals, and I’ve been trained on multiple technologies and support programs – both via remote access and in-person in three different states! I would never have guessed that, as a paralegal, I’d work for a firm that would invest in me and make me feel like such a valued member of the team."

Stephanie Darbo (Product Liability & Environmental, Des Moines)

Kristi Lehman - Faegre Baker Daniels

What's it like working with a cross-office team?

"For a law firm, FaegreBD really stays on top of emerging technologies. Their receptiveness to new modes of communication makes working with a cross-office team seamless. It’s like my colleagues are just down the hall."

Kristi Lehman (Corporate/Wealth Management, Indy 96th)

Jen Grimm - Faegre Baker Daniels

How would you rate the work-life balance?

"The work-life balance at FaegreBD is great. I’m able to work from home one day a week and I have the flexibility to take additional days as things come up. I was also recently allowed to restructure my schedule to accommodate my long commute and make more time for my family."

Jennifer Grimm (Labor & Employment, Minneapolis)

Sally Peterson - Faegre Baker Daniels

What opportunities have you had to grow your career?

"I’ve benefited from several opportunities for professional development since I joined FaegreBD, with the most recent opportunity being the emotional intelligence (EQ) training held in Denver. That training allowed me to connect with co-workers across all our U.S. offices, and it revealed so much to me – not only about myself and my colleagues, but about managing emotions to serve our clients successfully. I love that I’m encouraged to take advantage of events like this year after year. I also like being involved in the Community Service Committee as well as the Paralegal Advisory Group. I appreciate that I get to brainstorm with other paralegal managers on initiatives to help all our paralegals succeed."

Sally Peterson (Labor & Employment, Washington, D.C.)

RoxAnn Mack - Faegre Baker Daniels

"I have been with the firm for more than 30 years in the Boulder office. I’ve also been through two firm combinations in that time and have seen the Boulder office go from a local firm to a large international firm. At the same time, the firm has given me the opportunity to go from a legal administrative assistant to a senior paralegal. I was supported every step of the way – through all the schooling and training in between."

RoxAnn Mack (Corporate/Real Estate, Boulder)

Nina Kaczrowski - Faegre Baker Daniels

What opportunities have you had to give back to your community?

"One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had here has been helping an individual with his asylum application and immigration proceedings. This individual was forced to flee his native country due to political unrest. But, with the firm’s help, he is on his way to becoming a legal U.S. citizen and can now feel safe in his community. I appreciate that FaegreBD encourages participation in pro bono work and provides the training and support to help local nonprofits or individuals who otherwise would not have the resources they need to navigate our legal system successfully."

Nina Kaczrowski (Labor & Employment, Minneapolis)

Chelsea Bradshaw - Faegre Baker Daniels

Why do you stay at Faegre Baker Daniels?

"The people – and, really, my department as a whole – are what keep me at the firm. I work with brilliant, amazing people who are fun to be around – both inside and outside of the workplace. You truly couldn’t ask for a better team. Every day brings new challenges and problems to solve, and I’m always being kept on my toes. The cross-office support is unmatched, and I enjoy working with so many talented people around the nation."
