Mike Ponto of Faegre Baker Daniels will be a speaker at the National LGBT Bar Association's 2012 Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair in Washington, D.C. from August 23-25, participating in a workshop called "Progress Through Partnership — Advanced Litigation."
Together with other panelists representing the Department of Justice, Southern Poverty Law Center and University of Toledo College of Law, Ponto will discuss the complex partnership that brought about this year's groundbreaking consent decree resolving several lawsuits, all stemming from an epidemic of bullying in the Anoka-Hennepin School District. Ponto was part of the Faegre Baker Daniels team representing five students who filed a federal gender and sexual-orientation harassment lawsuit against the Minnesota school district. The session will include discussion on the path which led to the settlement; the different but complementary roles of government, nonprofit and private attorneys all working to enforce anti-bullying legislation; the path to settlement; and the important precedent established by the broad-reaching consent decree.
In addition to day-long seminars on family law and transgender issues, the three-day conference will feature workshops on cutting edge legal issues affecting LGBT individuals, families and the community. The National LGBT Bar Association is an affiliate of the American Bar Association.
