Mike Giudicessi was interviewed by TheAssociated Press about the Iowa Supreme Court ruling for firm client Author Solutions, providing free-speech protection to Internet and non-traditional publishers. The ruling expands first amendment protection against libel and privacy claims to companies that distribute Internet content, protection that historically applied only to newspapers and broadcasters. While the court stopped short of extending the same rights to individual social media users, citing that victims of cyberbullying and online smear campaigns should be allowed to sue for defamation, Giudicessi told the AP, "We were able to radically expand who is considered media. It's just not news organizations anymore, which is great." Giudicessi and Leita Walker handled the trial court and appeal work for Author Solutions, the leader in the self-publishing sector that was acquired by Penguin Group during the course of the litigation.
