Mike Giudicessi Reflects on the Des Moines Register's History of Preserving First Amendment Rights

In a recent article looking back on the history of the Des Moines Register, Mike Giudicessi of Faegre Baker Daniels, who formerly worked as an in-house attorney at the Register and is now their external counsel, reflected on the newspaper's history with regard to First Amendment law.

In the Register, Giudicessi explained how the paper was instrumental in opening up Iowa courtrooms to cameras as well as the establishment of reporters' rights to protect their sources from government pressure that could threaten free speech. The Des Moines Register had "set the tone really for development of First Amendment law throughout the country," Giudicessi said.
