Mike Giudicessi's Work to Help Des Moines Register Access Public Records Covered in Columbia Journalism Review

The Des Moines Register is suing two Iowa state agencies after officials refused to release records showing alleged abuses by state employees, the Columbia Journalism Review reported. Mike Giudicessi of Faegre Baker Daniels represents the Register in these cases. The process is moving slowly—two months after filing suits, the court has not issued a scheduling order or trial date in either matter.

"The pace of these cases demonstrates a major shortcoming of access laws," Giudicessi told the Columbia Journalism Review. "While public officials withhold access in a heartbeat, corrective actions by the press and the public take months and years."

Giudicessi noted that his client wants the court to read the law in the spirit of openness. "Rather than pushing the envelope, the Register simply seeks to unseal it."
