4 In-House Preferences for Better Outside Counsel

Patrick Reilly, associate in Faegre Baker Daniels’ product liability and environmental practice, partnered with Lisa Dunkin, litigation counsel at Zimmer, on an article published in Law360 about the relationship between in-house and outside counsel.

In the article, Dunkin and Reilly comment on four tips for outside counsel looking to build relationships with in-house clients: get to the point, remember who’s boss, be responsive, and think big picture.

“Make sure you put yourself in the in-house lawyer’s shoes, which includes taking the time to learn the business,” Reilly said. “The outside counsel who takes steps to think like the client…can differentiate himself from his peers and provide the most effective client service.”
