Leadership & Community

Pro Bono

  • Representing individuals with mental health disabilities to protect constitutional due process rights, including achieving a successful ruling from the Indiana Court of Appeals that a court-appointed guardian is required to give an individual notice and opportunity to be heard before depriving him of property
  • Establishing guardianships

Sarah is committed to reducing the abuses that unfortunately occur under guardianships. In addition to hundreds of pro bono hours for individuals under guardianships, she worked on a subcommittee of the Indiana State Bar Association’s Probate Review Committee to draft legislation (now codified in Indiana Code Section 29-3-9-6) requiring guardians to provide notices of accountings to an incapacitated person’s close family members. As a member of the ISBA’s Guardianship Registry Committee, she is working to develop an online registry of all Indiana guardians, which will provide for more oversight of guardians.
