Courtney Lawrence advises food industry clients ranging from e-commerce startups to industry-leading Fortune 100 companies on litigation, regulatory, commercial and transactional matters. She practices with the firm’s food litigation and regulatory team, which is nationally ranked by Chambers USA.

Litigation Matters

Courtney represents food manufacturers, distributors and retailers in litigation arising from recalls and foodborne illness outbreaks, consumer fraud class actions, and commercial and supply chain disputes. She is experienced in all stages of litigation, from analyzing substantive and procedural issues to developing an effective litigation strategy, to assisting at trial, to appellate briefing.

Regulatory Matters

Courtney advises food, dietary supplement and consumer product industry clients on regulatory compliance. She helps clients evaluate risks and implement solutions consistent with their unique business interests, goals and risk profiles. 

Courtney advises on:
  • Labeling and marketing review and substantiation
  • Risk management of consumer and competitor actions
  • Managing foodborne illness outbreaks, recalls, inspections and regulatory enforcement actions by FDA and USDA
  • Conducting brand-wide labeling audits
  • Federal, state and local licensing requirements 
  • Regulatory compliance issues when entering foreign markets
  • Compliance with menu labeling regulations
  • Developing policies, procedures and manuals, such as recall policies and SOPs
  • Compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

Commercial Matters

Courtney drafts and negotiates supply chain agreements and other contracts for food industry clients. She applies her litigation and regulatory experience to ensure clients’ contracts address the unique risks and issues facing the industry, such as compliance with food-related laws and regulations, marketing risks, and recalls.

Transactional Matters

Courtney advises on domestic and foreign food-related compliance issues in mergers and acquisitions involving food companies.

In-House Experience

During law school, Courtney worked in the in-house law department of an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services.
