Overview

Peter Routhier is an intellectual property lawyer focused on copyright and trademark law. Peter provides strategic counsel on the maintenance and preservation of copyright and trademark rights, enforces those rights in federal litigation, and defends against third-party infringement claims. Peter is also active in the usual adjacent areas of law, handling false advertising, right of publicity, defamation, and utility and design patent issues and claims.

Copyright Law

Peter is particularly experienced in copyright law. He has represented clients in federal copyright litigation spanning virtually the entire copyright landscape, including cases involving computer software, textile and other apparel design, written and recorded music, audiovisual works including network television programs, literature, fine art, photography, architecture, sculptural works of various sorts including monuments and toys, business forms and documents, online works involving web scraping, and a variety of other works and claims. Outside of the litigation context, Peter has provided counsel on a similarly broad array of copyright matters, including music licensing, the anti-circumvention and safe-harbor provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and the copyright issues that may arise out of the termination of software and other vendor contracts.

  • Peter also has a substantial pro bono practice, primarily addressing Fourth Amendment issues in Minnesota's appellate courts. He has represented the ACLU of Minnesota as amicus curiae and served as Special Assistant State Public Defender.
