Jessica Van Dalen


Jessica Van Dalen is a member of the firm's intellectual property group. She works with clients to prepare and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as well as government entities in Japan, Europe, Canada, China, Australia and other countries. Jessica also has experience in licensing agreements, portfolio analysis, opinion work related to infringement and patent invalidity, and post-grant proceedings. She works primarily in the mechanical arts but focused her engineering curriculum on polymer science and molecular-level interactions between materials. Secondarily, Jessica works in the materials and chemical arts in a variety of technology areas.

During law school, Jessica was a summer associate at Faegre Baker Daniels in 2009 and summer clerk at another Indianapolis law firm in 2008. While pursuing her bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering, she served as a co-op engineer with Raybestos Products Co. in Crawfordsville from 2003 to 2005, gaining experience in heavy-duty friction materials used primarily for automotive and agricultural vehicle applications. Jessica also was an engineering research assistant at Purdue University from 2006 to 2007, where she focused on formulations and testing of adhesives used for joining metallic substrates.

Representative Experience

  • Represents a manufacturer of all-terrain vehicles in the preparation and prosecution of all patent applications related to all aspects of vehicle design and construction, including suspension assemblies, non-pneumatic tires, frame construction, braking systems, air intake assemblies and powertrain configurations
  • Represents engine and vehicle manufacturers on various litigation avoidance and due diligence matters, such as freedom-to-operate analyses and invalidity analyses
  • Provides patentability analyses to clients in advance of patent prosecution matters
  • Faciliated the preparation of an expert report during a litigation matter for an automotive component manufacturer
  • Represented a patent owner in drafting a licensing agreement for two patents related to building materials
  • Analyzed patent references for a manufacturer of A/V equipment in preparation for a patent purchase
  • Represented a Swedish private equity fund in analysis of IP-related contracts associated with the acquisition of a medical device company
  • Represents an engine manufacturer in the preparation and prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications and in various non-infringement and invalidity analyses
  • Lead drafter on patent applications related to large-scale manufacturing processes, such as injection molding and compression molding processes
  • Represents a communications and electronics company in the prosecution of patent applications related to optical fibers, electronic plug assemblies, antennas and coatings for electric wires
