Baker & Daniels Awards $10,000 Diversity Scholarships

Baker & Daniels LLP has announced the first two recipients of its $10,000 diversity scholarships.

Haroon Anwar, a second-year law student at IU – Bloomington, and Abhishek Dubé, a second-year law student at IU – Indianapolis, were selected by Baker & Daniels' diversity committee to receive a $10,000 scholarship and summer associate position at the firm.

The diversity scholarships were established for students of varied ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. Lifestyle, disabilities and unique viewpoints are also considered when selecting students for the award. In addition to their applications, finalists are interviewed before the winners are chosen. Greg Utken, chair of the firm's diversity committee, said, "The scholarship committee was impressed with both Haroon and Abhishek's accomplishments, ambition and enthusiasm."

Dubé, who received his bachelor's degree in business administration at Carnegie Mellon University before pursuing his J.D. at IU – Indianapolis, is fluent in Hindi and has advanced knowledge of Spanish. He studied at the Renmin University of China School of Law as a China Law Summer Program Fellow in July 2007.

Dubé is a member of the Black Law Students Association, president of the Asian Law Students Association, an Indianapolis Bar Association Diversity Task Force team member and works as an extern for the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. Dubé was recently accepted to the Court Internship Program for the spring 2008 semester and will be working for the Honorable J. Magnus-Stinson in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Anwar received his bachelor's degree in economics and history from Indiana University in May 2006 and is currently a J.D. candidate at IU – Bloomington. He was a Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition participant and is a member of the Student Bar Association.

Anwar is an Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies associate, a member of the Public Interest Law Foundation and a member of the International Law Society. He has volunteered for the District 10 Pro Bono project and for the Katrina Recovery Project at the Mississippi Center for Justice. Last summer, Anwar worked for the city of Indianapolis in the Office of Corporation Counsel.

The scholarships are one of the first such programs offered by Indiana law firms and demonstrates Baker & Daniels' ongoing commitment to attracting and retaining individuals with diverse backgrounds.
