Faegre & Benson has been recognized among top U.S. law firms by Legal 500 United States in five categories: finance; tax; mergers, acquisitions and buyouts; real estate and construction; and litigation.
As was the case last year, three practices within the firm's corporate group were mentioned in the guide. Among these, the mergers and acquisitions practice was considered for the first time on a national rather than regional basis—reflecting the significant volume of deals handled by the firm that transcend the Midwest and Rocky Mountain markets.
The Faegre & Benson media practice was again distinguished for litigation dealing with the First Amendment, while its construction practice appeared in the Legal 500 for the first time this year.
The annual Legal 500 series recommends firms and lawyers by specific concentrations within each category.
With regard to mergers, acquisitions and buyouts (M&A: National Firms—Middle Market), Faegre & Benson "stands out as being particularly responsive, has strong expertise across all areas and provides excellent client service of uniformly high quality," according to the guide. Clients praised partners W. Morgan Burns, Steven Kennedy, Michael Stanchfield and Doug Wright.
In the area of finance (Capital Markets: Equity Offerings), the firm was distinguished nationally for providing "top-notch service." W. Morgan Burns was noted by clients for offering "common sense advice" and "real world solutions." Clients also described partner Jonathon Zimmerman as knowledgeable, responsive and "easy to work with."
Construction practices in the firm's Minnesota and Colorado offices (Construction: Midwest, West Coast) were recognized for handling the full range of construction-related disputes and transactions. Clients recommended Minneapolis-based practice leader William Joyce and partner Patrick O' Connor in addition to Denver-based partner David Arkell.
Partner Bruce Ackerman is singled out for particular knowledge in state taxation while Ken Levinson was distinguished for expertise in captive insurance structures and the aviation industry (Domestic Tax—Central). According to the guide, Faegre & Benson is the "commercial law leader" in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and the firm's tax practice is recommended by clients for a "business-minded approach to tax that gets results."
Highlighting the firm's successful representation of national media organizations in challenging Minnesota statutory restriction on exit polling, Legal 500 praised the firm's litigation (First Amendment Litigation and Counseling) expertise in this area of the law. Partner John Borger "produces exceptional results" and is a "top-rate First-Amendment attorney and litigator," according to the guide.
The Legal 500 team of researchers speaks to thousands of law firm commercial clients every year. Law firm recommendations are based largely on opinions expressed by clients and rival commercial lawyers. Law firm inclusion in the guide is based solely on merit.
