Baker & Daniels' South Bend Office Receives 'Pride of Place' Award

Baker & Daniels LLP was presented the 2010 Downtown South Bend Pride of Place Award for Interior Tenant Improvement after its instrumental role in a major revitalization project at one of downtown's most prominent buildings.

Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) honored Baker & Daniels as the project owner and Gary Lee Partners of Chicago as the architect for successful aesthetic improvement of the interior style, structural quality and overall enhancement of the space's function. The award program is sponsored by DTSB and the City of South Bend in conjunction with the Southold Awards hosted by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend.

The multimillion-dollar exterior and interior renovation of the 14-story KeyBank Building and plaza at the corner of Michigan Street and Jefferson Boulevard included the relocation of Baker & Daniels to the top five floors. The law firm signed a 15-year lease with options on additional space to meet future growth needs.

"Our new space has exceeded our expectations in all respects," said Richard L. Hill, managing partner of Baker & Daniels' South Bend office. "It allows our professionals to work in a most comfortable environment and to provide our clients with the highest level of service and care."

In Baker & Daniels' space, floors were completely redesigned, a multimedia meeting room was created and a new internal stairway was constructed to connect all floors. The meeting and conference space has been made available to a number of community groups and organizations.

The design by Gary Lee Partners, a nationally recognized architectural firm with other offices in New York and San Francisco, emphasized environmental innovations and the unique open staircase. The firm also designed Baker & Daniels' Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Washington, D.C. offices.

KeyBank and building owner Hinman Group invested nearly $8 million in exterior, lobby, elevator and other renovations to the structure. The City of South Bend financed the planned revitalization of the plaza directly west of the building.
