Faegre & Benson has been recognized among top U.S. law firms in the 2011 edition of  Legal 500 United States in five categories: capital markets (debt offerings), capital markets (equity offerings), mergers and acquisitions (middle market), construction, and real estate.

The annual Legal 500 series recommends firms and lawyers by specific concentrations within each category.

The firm's capital markets (debt offerings) practice was noted as being "excellent on all accounts" specifically, the notable experience of Sonia Shewchuk and James Nicholson. The firm's capital markets (equity offerings) received praise for their excellent track record and impressive client roster. Clients "can't speak highly enough of" Morgan Burns, Jonathan Zimmerman, and David Miller.

With regard to mergers and acquisitions (M&A: Middle-Market), Faegre & Benson was noted for its complex middle market deals and the improvement of its private equity and strategic M&A deal load. According to a client, the firm "has top notch expertise and service. All of the attorneys have excellent credentials; they are proactive, knowledgeable and good negotiators."

The firm's construction practice (including construction litigation) was recognized for handling the full range of construction-related disputes and transactions on a national and international basis. The group's lawyers were described as having "unique skill-sets," "very appropriate advice," and "very good value for money." Clients recommended Minneapolis-based practice leader William Joyce, Timothy O'Brien, Patrick O'Connor, and former practice head Peter Halls.  The firm's real estate practice was also recognized, calling attention to the work of Scott Anderegg, John Wheaton, Paul Moe, Peter Berrie, and John Herman.

The Legal 500 team of researchers speaks to thousands of law firm commercial clients every year. Law firm recommendations are based largely on opinions expressed by clients and rival commercial lawyers. Law firm inclusion in the guide is based solely on merit.
