Mary Bono of FaegreBD Consulting to Co-Chair 21st Century Privacy Coalition

Mary Bono, senior vice president at FaegreBD Consulting and a former U.S. congresswoman, has been named a co-chair of the newly formed 21st Century Privacy Coalition.

The 21st Century Privacy Coalition was formed to advocate for modernizing U.S. privacy and data security laws to better reflect consumer expectations as well as technological and competitive changes in the communications marketplace. Founding members include AT&T, Comcast, CTIA-The Wireless Association, DIRECTV, Time Warner Cable and Verizon.

While in Congress, Bono served as chairwoman of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, which has jurisdiction over privacy and data security laws. At FaegreBD Consulting, she works with clients to develop thoughtful policies that grow the Internet economy and maximize broadband networks throughout the U.S. Bono will co-chair the coalition with former Federal Trade Commission chairman Jon Leibowitz.

"Throughout my congressional career, I focused on protecting consumers from threats on the Internet," Bono said. "I look forward to working with Jon, policymakers, the entire coalition and other stakeholders to ensure that the Internet continues to be an environment that is safe for consumers as well as one where innovation thrives."

As consumers conduct more communications, commerce, learning and entertainment online, they expect their information to be afforded the same degree of privacy and security regardless of the entity collecting such information. Yet different privacy and security requirements apply to different parts of the Internet ecosystem, even for the same information collected during the same Internet activity. The coalition will advocate for laws that provide such protections, while also ensuring the Internet remains an engine of economic growth and social change.
