Jim Spaanstra, Faegre Baker Daniels partner in the environmental practice and leader of the firm’s energy and natural resources industry team, is departing the firm to lead Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) as the organization searches for a permanent executive director. FaegreBD is hopeful that Spaanstra will return to the firm following his tenure with GOCO.
The GOCO Board selected Spaanstra to lead the organization while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement for Lise Aangeenbrug, who will leave GOCO for a leadership role with the National Park Foundation on May 1. Spaanstra, a GOCO Board member for the last seven years, is a nationally recognized environmental and natural resources lawyer, chair of the Colorado School of Mines Board and a member of the American College of Environmental Lawyers.
“During his tenure with Faegre Baker Daniels, Jim has grown the energy and natural resources team into a nationally recognized resource for clients,” said managing partner Andrew Humphrey. “We are proud to support Jim in his involvement with GOCO, as he carries out our firm’s commitment to the communities in which we serve.”
GOCO invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state's parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. The agency’s independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created by voters in 1992, GOCO has committed more than $825 million in lottery proceeds to more than 4,700 projects in all 64 counties without any tax dollar support.
“The GOCO Board is fortunate to have a professional of Mr. Spaanstra’s caliber and merit, with such strong knowledge of the GOCO’s projects and programs, step in during a transition period for the organization,” said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.
Spaanstra leaves his position at FaegreBD after nearly 18 years of service to the firm as a standout environmental lawyer and leader of the energy and natural resources industry team.
