FaegreBD Celebrates $25M Grant for Center for New Americans

Faegre Baker Daniels celebrates a generous $25 million gift to the University of Minnesota Law School’s James H. Binger Center for New Americans. FaegreBD is a proud law firm partner of the Center.

The gift, a grant from the Robina Foundation, will provide financial support for the ongoing operations of the Center. The Center creates a national model for the provision of comprehensive and cohesive legal services for immigrant communities through a variety of means including improving federal immigration law and policy, protecting detainee rights and improving access to legal representation for refugees and immigrants, among other things. The grant will also establish and fund a professorship in clinical law, and will support scholarships for law students.

FaegreBD is one of three law firm partners supporting the Center. The firm is proud to share the Center’s mission to expand legal services for noncitizens, improve our nation’s immigration laws and educate noncitizens about their rights.

In 2015 and 2016, a pro bono team of FaegreBD lawyers, along with attorneys from the Center, represented an immigrant at the U.S. Supreme Court in Mellouli v. Holder. The Supreme Court was asked to decide whether a lawful permanent resident can be deported for possession of drug paraphernalia in the absence of any proof that the paraphernalia is related to a substance listed in the Federal Controlled Substances Act. Ultimately, the Court accepted Mellouli’s argument and the client was able to return to the United States. Read more about Mellouli v. Holder.
