Drew Soshnick Explains Indiana's New Child Support Law
Under a new Indiana law, child support will stop when children turn 19, unless they are going to college, WTHR reported in the news segment, "Changes on the Way to State's Child Support Laws." Prior law required parents to pay support until children turned 21.
"There will be many income earners, child support payers, who will say, 'I want on July 1, 2012, to see my support reduced,'" said Drew Soshnick, a family law attorney at Faegre Baker Daniels.
Even though child support will officially end at age 19, parents will still have to pay if their child goes to college. "For those children's educational needs, a petition must be filed prior to age 19," Soshnick told WTHR.
The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2012, but the changes are not automatic. Parents will have to go back to court to amend child support payments.
