Scott Wright's London Play Lands Above the Fold in Minnesota Media

On May 15, 2015, a play written by Scott Wright, Minneapolis partner and labor and employment practice leader, will debut at the 2015 Cookham Festival in Cookham, Berkshire. After the premiere, the play, Regulation 18B - No Free Man, will be performed in various venues throughout England and Wales in June and July.

While no performance dates are scheduled in Wright’s native Minnesota, Minnesota Lawyer featured the UK release of the play in their March 30 publication. Wright said that he got his inspiration to write the play upon reading an article about Liversidge v. Anderson, a civil liberties case during WWII Britain that challenged their wartime laws on detention without trial.

He explained to Minnesota Lawyer that after writing the end of the play first, he encountered his first experience with writer’s block. Wright, who had never written a play before, taught himself how to overcome this by reading books by others who have gone through the process. “Finally I had this brilliant idea that ‘I bet somebody has written a book about how to write a play,’” he said. A common theme of the books he referenced advised him to read plays, not just see them. “I was reading plays to determine, ‘That’s how they do that.’ Eventually I started at the beginning”

Free time is scarce for Wright between his demanding legal career and family life, so he fits in his passion for writing when he can, typically in the early morning hours on weekends. “I get a lot of energy out of writing. It’s not like work,” Wright said.
