Whistleblowers in U.S. ex rel. Washington and Mahoney v. EDMC alleged that Education Management Corp. (EDMC), the second-largest for-profit education company in the United States, was illegally recruiting students and participating in consumer fraud. Tiffany Riffer represented the whistleblowers in the case and worked closely with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Department of Education, which resulted in the largest settlement ever paid by an educational institution under the False Claims Act.
