Reporter and Newspaper Win Summary Judgment in Libel and False Light Case

North America - United States | North America | United States - Iowa

A reporter and newspaper publishing company won summary judgment in a libel and false light case brought by a police officer. Our firm represented both the reporter and publishing company in this case.

The ruling in the Iowa District Court concluded that the article at issue was true or substantially true, that plaintiff was a public figure and had failed to prove actual malice, and that the statement that plaintiff was a "pedophile" was a nonactionable opinion. Smith v. Strong, No. CVCV039797, 2018 WL 2418929 (Iowa Dist. May 21, 2018).
